Director of Engineering

Position Overview

Hunter Crown is recruiting a Director of Engineering for an established manufacturer of custom-engineered environmental systems serving municipal and industrial markets. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced leader who can strengthen engineering operations, develop managers, and drive project execution and organizational performance.

Reporting to the VP of Operations, the Director will oversee approximately 20 employees through three direct reports. This is primarily an operational and people leadership role requiring sound technical judgment, decisive leadership, and the ability to drive results rather than responsibility for detailed engineering design.

Professional Responsibility and Scope

The Director will oversee engineering throughput, project schedules, resource allocation, and quality standards from order acceptance through manufacturing and commissioning support. Key priorities include optimizing workflows, coordinating project handoffs, maintaining accountability, and ensuring engineering teams consistently meet delivery commitments.

This individual will manage a portfolio of concurrent projects, proactively identify scheduling risks, resolve operational challenges, and make timely decisions to maintain project momentum. The Director will also ensure engineering decisions align with manufacturing requirements, project budgets, customer expectations, and profitability.

Success requires understanding integrated industrial equipment sufficiently to evaluate technical challenges, guide problem-solving, and make informed decisions without becoming involved in detailed engineering design.

Location and Lifestyle Context

The position is based onsite in Central Texas, providing direct interaction with engineering and manufacturing teams. Travel of approximately 10 to 15 percent may be required for customer meetings, project execution, and commissioning support.

Long Term Professional Growth

This opportunity offers significant autonomy to influence engineering operations, develop emerging leaders, and support continued business growth. The Director will have authority over staffing, performance management, resource planning, and operational initiatives while working closely with senior leadership to advance engineering capabilities and organizational performance.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range is $150,000 to $200,000, plus a 10 to 20 percent performance bonus based equally on company and individual results. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, along with a 401(k) plan.

Team Environment and Leadership Approach

The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with a strong sense of urgency who can develop emerging managers, establish clear expectations, address performance challenges, and resolve obstacles efficiently.

This individual will promote collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability while maintaining project momentum. Strong communication and partnership across engineering, manufacturing, sales, and operations are essential. The successful candidate will balance people development, operational excellence, and practical problem-solving to drive consistent results.

Organizational Stability and Industry Position

The company is an established manufacturer of engineered environmental equipment with a strong municipal customer base and opportunities for expansion into industrial markets. Its technical capabilities, in-house manufacturing operations, and commitment to delivering high-quality engineered solutions provide a strong foundation for continued growth.

Experience and Qualification Summary

Candidates should bring proven experience leading teams within engineering, technical project management, sales engineering, or related industrial operations. Demonstrated success in managing complex project portfolios, developing people, improving workflows, and maintaining accountability for schedules, quality, and performance is essential.

Strong decision-making skills, business and operational understanding, and the ability to manage resources, resolve challenges, and deliver projects efficiently are critical.

Experience with integrated equipment systems involving filtration, water treatment, reverse osmosis, process skids, fluid handling, air movement, or similar technologies is strongly preferred. Experience in engineer-to-order or custom equipment manufacturing and a bachelor's degree in engineering are also preferred. Direct odor control experience is not required.
